Trend that manifests itself in art and literature of the late eighteenth century until the late nineteenth century. Born in Germany, Englandand Italy, but is gaining strength in France and from there spreadthroughout Europe and the Americas. Is opposed to rationalism and rigor of neoclassicism.
It is characterized by defending freedom of creation and focus onemotion. The works value individualism, suffering love, the Christianreligion, nature, national issues and the past. The trend is influencedby the thesis of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) that man is born good but society corrupts. It is also imbued with the ideals of freedom of the French Revolution (1789).
